The American Eagle bullion coin program was established in 1986 to provide a way for individuals to purchase investment grade precious metal bullion coins. Mandated by law, the US Mint must produce gold and silver coins. Platinum coins are also minted in certain years, however unlike the gold and silver coins, there is no law that mandates their production.
Gold American Eagle bullion coins are minted in several sizes. They are minted in tenth troy ounce to one troy ounce, and contain .9167 fine gold.
Silver American Eagle bullion coins are minted in one troy ounce sizes, and contain .999 fine silver.
Platinum American Eagle bullion coins are minted in tenth troy ounce to one troy ounce sizes, and contain .9995 fine platinum.
