My college-aged son is really wanting to get a credit card. I told him that it is not a good idea. Most students end up spending beyond their means, and then it takes them years to pay off their debts. It is wise only to spend money that you have. I suggested that he look into getting a prepaid mastercard. It has the benefits of a credit card, but you cannot spend more money than you load onto the card.
